Description

The reference image is a fairly notable photograph by Steve McCurry. Was a good exercise in fabric and skin tone, and learned how to make my own brush.

Took approximately two days.

Quick pencil sketch > Photoshop > Freehand Mousework

not a paintover.

C&C Welcome. It helps!

HEY Found a link to her image 20 years later! http://cloud.datashed.net/static/images/BSANews/missingafghangirl.jpg

Oh, yes, I recognised the photograph at once! I think it's quite a nice interpretation you did here, although I would pay more attention to the eyes while making it -- they are the strongest part of the picture --their expression is-- and I feel that somehow lacks from this picture. :)

you captured very well the characteristics of the Middle East women , but I think that the eyes looks a little unreal, but it is a great drawing, congratulations!

I like the photo. Hmm. The cloth around her head and shoulders seem to lack shadows and contrast.
I'd say I like the lips and hair...The eyes are rather empty.

I've seen the photo this was created from and therefor I know that this was drawn from a photo. Since you did not take the photo, I'm not too impressed, anyone can copy a photo that someone else took. Great picture nonetheless, but you should prove that you can produce quality from either life drawing or from your own imagination.

Walterz: You didn't mind the use of photo reference at this link here http://www.gfxartist.com/community/member_gallery/15342.

I don't claim to be a great artist, but "anyone can copy a photo"... I would like to see your best attempt. I am proud of this attempt, but I will soon progress, and improve.

"you should prove that you can produce quality from either life drawing" - I have a self portrait that I feel almost has the same quality of work, maybe a little less since it was my first foray in realistic rendering in color.

And Walterz, Im glad your art class is teaching you to expand your perspective on drawing outside of your imagination. I see that you too have started to draw from 'life drawings' with your self portraits. Frankly as fellow artist, I hope in the future you realize the validity of using references (life and photos) and even replicating images as a learning tool. How else can you stare at a woman's face only 3 inches away without a photo and scrutinize every pore?

Bleh. Thanks for the comment though, I will defintely accept the challenge of proving myself as an artist, not to you, but to myself. It is a lifelong journey isnt it?

nice peice i like the link you gave of the 20yrs later. i agree with you that using images to refernce from even famous ones can help you learn tecniques and you can pick up new ideas from them. good work. looking forward to seeing more stuff.

Hey J-yo...I like this pic so much that i had to drop you a comment. My very first in fact. I'm a GFX virgin..shh dont tell anyone...I'm shy. ;o) Unlike anyone else on this forum I know first hand how many hours and how much effort went into this picture. Walterz you give me a time and a place... I'll fight ya. Just playin but maybe if you try something other than using a pencil to draw 20 pics of yourself you will realize that art comes in many forms. And a photo is nessary to get this amount of detail. Most subjects won't hold still long enough. You seem to have all the time in the world to look in the mirror. Try taking a look outside sometime and lighten up.
