Description

i took the photo and sketched it out and painted it in photoshop.

i wanted it to be realistic so i used the sketch/scan/overlay check to make sure of the accuracy.

i think you tried to make it too exact... sometimes, copying a reference photo exactly ends up with a weird outcome. to me, the shape of her mouth and the wrinkle from her nose to her mouth is PERFECT to the photo and yet, does nothing for her character. the photo shows more of her character than this does and yet you copied it exactly. sometimes... the artist needs to naturally change things to better capture a person. also, i dont really understand the large white slotching above and around her head, i think it could have been more subtle or blended more to fit the bottom half of the image in brush style.

other than that its extremely well executed... i see a little bit of the hair that would need fixing but thats all as far as proportion, value, texture, etc is concerned. since this was a portrait that you wanted to do her justice, i would have to knock off a point, because i think it doesnt capture her as well as you could have done. :) it is beautiful, well done. +9

This is stunning Kimiyo, as all your artwork and portraits. I love how you combined realism, the details of face, along with the bakcground and lower part. More sketchy, with palette knife I dare to say. Great job. It would look good in some color, some sepia or whatever. You're good with colors too

Nice work. The mixture of different "materials", textures and styles is cool. Great job on the face and hair -- especially her right eye and glasses. I think the right corner of her mouth needs to be more subtle, and the same goes for the highlights and shadows on her neck. The shadow cast by her glasses could be a little softer too. The edges of her shirt are too sharp in some areas -- especially around the shoulders and sleeve openings.

Overall, a nice piece.

One of your best. Looks like you perfected the style you've been aiming for. 9/9

Great, strong, good sketchy lines and pasty strokes. One crit: I think the dusty stroke above her head looks filtered (even though it's not). Kinda corny.

I disagree with starqueen,
it's not exactly like the photo, for example the lightning in the eye, which does not exist. and that's the reason why many things from the photo get lost!

besides that, i think arenhaus would say, that it's nothing special to copy a picture like you find on his article (http://www.chiseledrocks.com/articles/photos/section0.htm), and i do agree with him

in addition to that, you should better post a sketch to the sketch thread, although i must admit that you have done well.

7/10

thank you for the link, I do think she is very talented.
and to be honest i am stalking her works right now,
so thanks again!

i am not an expert on painting or drawing, but i do find the white thing around her head a bit too much, but still it doens't steal the beauty that is in her that you want to capture.

I think this is wonderfully done. It has way more character than the photo.

To me though, some of the hard edges don't seem to mix well with the frehand feel of the painting. Like on her left shoulder sleeve and arm. And the background looks like it was kind of an afterthought. Like you painted the background around the subject (that's not necessarily bad, it's just not my taste). Over her right shoulder it looks like she is wearing or carrying the background on herself.

I really like the thick feeling of paint on this digital image which comes from the movement created by your brush strokes. Like you loaded a lot of paint onto a big brush.

Overall, I think this is just great!

Somehow I don't think the arms being cut off by shadow works too well here. It turned out well for her torso though, so maybe it's just an issue of amount. (lighting-wise that is)
